Czencz named club captain
CAIRNS Surf Life Saving Club has appointed James Czencz as Club Captain for the 2026 season.

Mr Czencz joined Cairns SLSC in 2025 after relocating to Cairns to take up a role as a Physiotherapy Lecturer at CQUniversity. He patrols with the Bright Sparks (Patrol Team 4) and brings surf lifesaving experience from Port Campbell SLSC in Victoria, as well as casual patrols at Whale Beach SLSC in Sydney.
He holds a range of surf lifesaving qualifications, including Bronze Medallion, IRB Crew, Training Officer, IRB Driver and RWC (Jet Ski) operations.
Earlier this year Mr Czencz represented the club on the Sunshine Coast to complete the Silver Medallion, Advanced Lifesaving, after being selected by Surf Life Saving Queensland.
Outside of surf lifesaving, he works as a physiotherapist and lecturer, and recently completed a PhD focused on improving access to physical activity for people living with disabilities. He has also been involved in several community inclusion programs.
Mr Czencz takes on the role following Max Rivett, who has recently moved into a new position with Surf Life Saving Queensland.
The club acknowledged Mr Rivett’s contribution during his time as Club Captain.
“We thank Max for his leadership and commitment during his time as Club Captain,” the club said.
Mr Czencz said he came to surf lifesaving later in life but had quickly discovered the opportunities it offered.
“Someone who’s coming to surf lifesaving a little bit later in life can find all these wonderful opportunities through the training, doing things they never thought they’d do, like driving the rescue boat or jet ski and being involved in advanced lifesaving courses,” he said.
“It’s a great club and a great volunteering opportunity for someone to come in, grow and do things they might never have thought they’d do.”
He said he was also “absolutely thrilled by just how welcoming the community has been”.
Mr Czencz said he was looking forward to working closely with patrol teams and members as preparations for the 2026 season begin.
His appointment comes as the club begins planning and training for the upcoming patrol season, with members set to return to the beach later in the year.
